What this means for you

Launch the tag, but lead with it as a backpack add-on and a multi-buy rather than a cheap standalone item. Postage on a small parcel is the deciding factor: at $2.50 a single tag cannot cover its own shipping, while two tags or a tag travelling with a backpack can. Two things still need confirming before the numbers are final — the material and the packed weight.

About this report

What we set out to answer

To provide an assessment of whether bag tags are a good individual opportunity or just a companion to the backpack — and to identify the best way to position the product in either case. This report covers three research areas: keywords, market, and shipping.

Research finding

Observed in keyword data, competitor listings and pricing.

Assumption

Modelled figure used because the finished product does not exist yet.

Recommendation

Our advice based on the above — marked throughout as “what this means for you”.

1. Keyword research

Demand & search landscape

Market size

Small

The individual niche you target is relatively small, but it plays a valuable role in your overall strategy. You use it to complement broader demand, which helps make your products more appealing to specific customer segments.

Competition

Low

You’re operating in a niche with relatively low competition, which is a strong advantage. This manageable market size means you can more easily stand out and attract targeted buyers.

Keyword opportunities

Typical

We’ve identified clear opportunities that align well with your shop’s goals. Research indicates this strategy fits your target market and product niche, increasing the chance of attracting relevant shoppers.

Keyword analytics: keywords by section, search volume split and competition split
‘Backpack tag’ demonstrates clear potential by aligning well with the concept you’re developing. We’ll focus on this theme as well as the materials and purpose terms.

Keywords by commercial theme

Monthly searches and competing-listing counts below are the actual figures from the keyword research carried out for this report. Volume on its own is not a recommendation — relevance is our assessment of how well the term matches a buyer who would want your product. Terms shown under Further terms worth testing have no research data behind them and are deliberately not scored.

Keyword recommendation

  1. 01personalized backpack tag (41 searches / 28,750 listings) — exact product match with the least competition of the exact-match terms.
  2. 02custom backpack tag (27 / 25,581) — the American spelling variant, essential for a US-first launch.
  3. 03backpack tag (682 / 47,403) — the head term with the best demand-to-competition balance in the whole set.
  4. 04custom bag tag (213 / 78,491) and personalized bag tag (34 / 102,163) — for shoppers who describe the item differently.
  5. 05custom name tag (1,558 / 195,199) and name tag (13,352 / 322,054) — high volume but crowded; use in tags, not the title.
  6. 06waterproof bag tag (25 / 3,884) — low volume, but the durability claim that fits the outdoor positioning.
  7. 07tackle box tag, hiking bag tag, fishing/hunting bag accessories — below the 25-search reporting floor, but almost uncontested.
  8. 08leather bag tag (2,664 / 22,983) — only worth pursuing if the supplier confirms leather.

What this means for you

The keywords point to one clear positioning: a personalised backpack tag for outdoor use. Lead your title with “Personalised Backpack Tag”, then layer the activity terms — fishing, hunting, hiking — across separate listings. That combination gives you a term with genuine demand plus a set of terms almost nobody is competing for.

A $2.50 price positions the product just below existing bestsellers, making it attractive to price-sensitive shoppers. That works for lead generation — encouraging clicks and first purchases — but it does not cover postage on its own.

Illustrative margin model

Illustrative only — assumptions, not Mohamed’s confirmed costs

  • Assumed selling price: $12.00 standalone / $16.00 two-tag bundle
  • Assumed postage: $7.69 — USPS Commercial Ground Advantage, Zone 5, verified against Notice 123 effective 12 July 2026. Any parcel under one pound now pays the same price within a zone; the national range is $6.93 (Zone 1) to $8.40 (Zones 8–9).
  • Assumed platform fees: an illustrative allowance of 11% of the order value, used here to stand in for transaction, payment processing and listing fees. This is a modelling allowance, not a figure taken from your Etsy account.
  • Actual profitability must be recalculated using your actual Etsy payment and account fees, actual selling price, actual packed weight, actual postage paid and the confirmed supplier unit cost.
  • Remaining before product cost: roughly $2.99 on the standalone tag ($12.00 − $7.69 postage − $1.32 fees), roughly $6.55 on the two-tag bundle ($16.00 − $7.69 − $1.76, covering two units)
  • This model assumes seller-paid postage (free shipping to the buyer). If postage is charged separately to the buyer, the picture changes substantially: the $7.69 leaves the item price, so a $12 standalone tag retains roughly $10.68 before fees and unit cost. Buyer-paid postage protects margin but can reduce conversion. Etsy states that certain US domestic listings charging more than $6 for shipping may also appear lower in Etsy search results. The two models should be tested rather than assumed.

The point of this model is not a final profit figure — packaging, actual account fees and real postage are all still unknown. It is to show the shape of the problem: unit cost has to be low enough that two tags plus postage still leave a margin, and the standalone tag has very little room in it under seller-paid shipping.

What this means for you

$2.50 is the right price for a tag added to a backpack order, not for a tag sold on its own. Price the standalone version at $8–$12 in line with the bestsellers, push the two-tag bundle hard, and treat the cheap tag as a way to sell bags.

Your question: is ~2 inches large enough? — our recommendation

Based on the products reviewed for this report, and on the need for the personalised name to stay legible in an Etsy thumbnail, we recommend testing approximately 3–4 inches long rather than the current ~2 inch format. At around 2 inches the name is hard to read at thumbnail size and the item reads more like a keyring charm than a bag tag. This is a conversion and presentation recommendation, not a claimed industry specification.

Suggested direction

Finished sizeRecommendation: test 3–4 inches long. Based on the competitor listings reviewed and the need for a personalised name to stay legible in an Etsy thumbnail — not a claimed industry standard.
Is ~2 inches enough?Recommendation: we favour going larger. At roughly 2 inches a personalised name is hard to read at thumbnail size and the item reads as a keyring charm rather than a bag tag.
ShapeRecommendation: a simple bold outline — rectangle, tag, or a shaped silhouette (fish, arrowhead, tree) for outdoor variants. Shape is a low-cost way to differentiate.
Colour strategyRecommendation: a small, decisive palette. Observed in the competitor images reviewed: bright colours dominate the children's end of the market, so a more muted outdoor palette would separate you from it.
AttachmentNot confirmed. Recommendation once the supplier confirms options: a secure ring or swivel clip, photographed clearly, since durability is a common buyer concern for outdoor use.
PersonalisationRecommendation: a single name, large and legible. Legibility at thumbnail size matters more than styling.
MaterialNot confirmed — no material has been chosen yet. Keyword evidence: 'leather bag tag' has the strongest material demand (2,664 searches / 22,983 listings) and 'waterproof bag tag' (25 / 3,884) fits the outdoor positioning. Confirm the material with your supplier before either claim appears in listing copy.

What this means for you

Specify a 3–4 inch tag with a bold shape, a small muted outdoor palette and a sturdy clip. Do not commit to a material in your listing copy until it is confirmed. If the finished product can genuinely be described as waterproof or weather-resistant, that is a useful positioning and keyword opportunity for the outdoor market — but only make the claim once the supplier has confirmed it.

2. Market research · C

Imagery strategy

Many listings focus on children’s products, highlighting low cost and bright colours. Your offering stands apart by targeting a different niche with a more novel design — which strengthens the idea that your accessory is a complementary addition to your range, not a direct competitor.

Market research suggests a clear product shot showing off the colours or specialisation. This applies above all to the thumbnail.

The additional imagery should include a size guide, material, personalisation and colour options.

Observed — what competitors are showing

Bright acrylic letter-shaped personalised bag tags with swivel clips
Embroidered fabric keyring tags in multiple colours with names
Pastel scalloped personalised name tags held in a lifestyle photo
Beaded personalised name keychains with a feature-icon strip in the thumbnail
Pink layered acrylic name tag shown attached to a black backpack

Observed in the listings reviewed: bright colours, several names shown in one frame, and a strongly children-focused presentation. The name is large and legible in every thumbnail, and the strongest examples add a feature strip or show the tag on an actual bag. Recommended: use the same image formats with an adult outdoor look, which is where your range differs from these listings.

Recommended image order

1. Primary thumbnailA single clean product shot of one personalised tag, large in frame, name clearly readable at small size. This image alone decides whether you get the click in Etsy search results.
2. Personalisation close-upShows the name detail and the quality of the lettering.
3. Tag attached to backpackProves the use case instantly and links the product to your existing range.
4. Scale / dimensionsSize guide with the tag next to a hand or ruler — answers the biggest doubt about a small item.
5. Colour or style optionsAll available colours in one grid.
6. Attachment methodClose-up of the clip or ring.
7. Bundle / multi-buy offerTwo or three tags together, with the multi-buy price stated on the image.
8. Lifestyle / outdoor useThe tag on a fishing or hunting pack, outdoors.
9. Key featuresA simple icon strip: personalised, lightweight, gift ready — plus weather-resistant only if the confirmed material genuinely supports the claim.
10. Gift presentationOnly if you sell a gift version — packaging shot.

What this means for you

Image one has one job: make a shopper scanning a grid of small squares understand instantly that this is a personalised backpack tag. One tag, one name, filling the frame. Save the colour grids, size guides and lifestyle shots for positions two onwards.

Preferred launch structure

  1. 01 — Personalised tag as a $2.50–$4.00 upgrade on every backpack listing.
  2. 02 — A two-tag multi-buy listing at $14–$18, promoted as the better-value option.
  3. 03 — A standalone personalised tag at $8–$12 to hold the core keywords.
  4. 04 — Separate fishing, hunting and hiking variants of that listing to claim the low-competition terms.
  5. 05 — A back-to-school name tag listing ahead of next season, where up to $12 is supportable.

What this means for you

Sell the tag three ways. The add-on has the strongest shipping economics, the bundle improves order value, and the standalone listing gives the product independent search visibility.

$15 two-tag bundle~$7.6951%Workable
$20 three-tag bundle~$7.6938%Good
Backpack order + tagPotentially little/no incremental postageTo confirmLikely the best economics, subject to packed weight

Based on $7.69, the USPS Commercial Ground Advantage Zone 5 price verified against Notice 123 effective 12 July 2026 (national range $6.93 – $8.40). Under one pound the price is set by zone alone, so multi-tag orders travel for the same postage as one, and a tag added to an existing backpack order may add little or no incremental postage, depending on the final packed weight of the backpack order. International shipping should not be a priority at launch.

What this means for you

Ship domestically with USPS Ground Advantage, buy labels through Etsy to start and check the same orders against Pirate Ship. Once a real packed weight exists, redo these percentages — they set your prices, not the other way round.

Before you scale

What we would test first

Do not launch every possible variation at once. Run a small validation test first — the objective is to prove demand and conversion before investing in a large listing range.

  1. 01Phase 1 — Core personalised bag tag listing.
  2. 02Phase 1 — The same tag offered as an add-on upgrade on every backpack listing.
  3. 03Phase 1 — A two-tag bundle to test order value and shipping economics.
  4. 04Phase 2 — One fishing-focused listing, only once Phase 1 shows demand.
  5. 05Only after evidence — hunting, hiking, keychain and back-to-school variants. Compare impressions, clicks and conversion before expanding.

Next steps

Recommended launch plan

  1. 01Confirm final tag material and attachment method with your supplier.
  2. 02Confirm recommended dimensions (3–4 in long) with your supplier.
  3. 03Produce or obtain a finished sample.
  4. 04Pack and weigh the finished item in the mailer you intend to use.
  5. 05Confirm actual postage in Etsy and Pirate Ship using that real weight.
  6. 06Finalise retail, multi-buy and add-on pricing from the confirmed postage.
  7. 07Launch to US customers first.
  8. 08Ship with USPS Ground Advantage.
  9. 09Buy labels through Etsy initially and benchmark against Pirate Ship.
  10. 10Launch the standalone / multi-buy / backpack add-on structure together.
  11. 11Review search and conversion performance after the first run of sales.
